HØYEVARDE lighthouse

Høyevarde Lighthouse offers a unique setting for both small and large events. The venue is well suited for conferences, meetings, team building, dinners, and weddings.

History of Høyevarde

Høyevarde Lighthouse Station was established in 1700 and has served as an important beacon in Karmsundet, formerly known as Nordvegen. Høyevarde covers approximately 60 acres of natural landscape and is a hidden, untouched gem located within Hydro’s industrial site on Karmøy.

In 1700, Heinrich Petersen Ysted was granted a royal licence to operate the lighthouse at Høyevarde. The lighthouse as it stands today dates from 1858 and consists of a lighthouse keeper’s residence, customs station, boathouse, sea house, and a wood-fired bakery. The area is rich in history, including a Bronze Age burial site dating back to around 1500 BC. Høyevarde is also mentioned in English historical records, as the Earl of Bothwell, the lover of Queen Mary Stuart, was reportedly captured here after fleeing Scotland.

The lighthouse hotel offers comfortable rooms, a spectacular meeting room, an elegant dining hall, beautiful gardens, and above all, a sense of peace and tranquillity. Our chefs use only fresh ingredients from the region’s finest suppliers and producers, serving everything from seafood delicacies to game from the surrounding nature.

The entire Høyevarde site is protected by the Norwegian Directorate for Cultural Heritage.
